Stanley Eguma, head coach of Rivers United is confident of his preparedness ahead of the 2022/23 NPFL league season kick-off as he also gives his take on the abridged format of the competition.
Eguma made this known in his post match pressers following his team’s 0-0 friendly game against Akwa United in Uyo.
“It was a very good game, very good test for both teams, for a long time, we’ve been yearning for the start of the league and what we saw today is a reminiscent of what you will see in the league.”
“This kind of game puts the players in top form atleast we’ve faced stronger challenges in CAF.”
“So if we have opportunity to play games like this, it will put us in a better place to contest the CAF Confederation Cup.”
“I enjoyed it, my players reacted very well, Akwa United also proved to be a strong team too and they are going to be a contender in the league, I’m impressed with what I saw in both teams,” he praised the opposition team.
Stanley Eguma speaking on the Group B draw;
“For me as a person, I never wished to play abridged league because it’s never the best for Nigeria. Nigeria have grown to the extent that we don’t have anything to do with abridged league.”
“But the scenario demands we have to do it and IMC has come up to get us started.”
“For us, we are ready, we can not expect anything less because we know that the league will help us in the Confederation Cup where we in the group stage now.”
“I think we are ready for the league. For our group, group B, we have strong teams there and we are also contenders.”
“There’s no two ways about it but we have very technical teams in that group. Teams like Rangers, Niger Tornadoes, Lobi Stars, Bendel Insurance are all strong teams in the Premiership that we have to look at for.”
“It’s a tough group, no easy group but at the end of the day, I think we shall see and enjoy good football this season,” Eguma promised.
