NPFL 2020/21: MFM Steals Three Points In South West Derby

The first South West Derby of the season was action-packed as MFM and Sunshine Stars went head to head for three points at the Agege Soccer Temple.

In a battle that saw two experienced coaches go toe to toe tactically, the Akure Gunners predominated proceedings for larger parts of the game.

Despite the hosts drawing first blood as early as the 8th minute through a Dennis Obasi tap in after Akanni Elijah’s pass found Clement Ogwu, the Owena waves still played tantalizing football.

Ayo Adejubu, Fuad Ekelojuoti, Kehinde Adeyemi all had an inspiring game but the Gunners though fired from all cylinders but without aim.

The lack of quality in the final will be the undoing of Gbenga Ogunbote’s side as they kept finding spaces in MFM’s defence.

Defensive half time substitution from Tony Boulus saw Akanni Elijah replaced by a Odioku as Sunshine made early substitutions of theirs to beef up their attack.

Chances upon chances kept begging to be buried as the Olukoya Boys’ defense kept being divided by the brightness from the Sunshine.

Sadeeq Yusuf would have the best chance of the game after he was found in the box from a Fuad Ekelojuoti cross.

The lanky striker’s header could only find the upright after young goalie, Osayi Kingdom was found in no man’s land.

Enterprising winger, Ayo Adejubu’s injury was sum up the away team’s performance as they were without inspirational, Ogunniyi Omo Jesu who seemed to have finalized his move to a Latvia club.

MFM sucked all the pressure from the misfiring Gunners as they edged the interesting game by a lone goal.

The win sees MFM win their second home game of the season while Sunshine loss again on the road.
