Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has urged Nigerians to stay united behind the Super Eagles as they prepare for the crucial World Cup playoffs, warning that political distractions and misinformation could derail the country’s football momentum.
Dikko was responding to criticism surrounding the recently completed FIFA-funded Goal Project in Birnin Kebbi, which some lawmakers described as “substandard” despite costing $1.2 million. The NSC boss, however, insisted the project met all international standards and was fully approved and certified by FIFA.

“I was the first person to handle a FIFA Goal Project in Nigeria, so I can speak to the Kebbi project issue,” Dikko said. “The project was properly advertised, monitored, and certified by FIFA. The money released for it was $1.2 million at an exchange rate of around N300 to a dollar. It’s absurd to compare that with the Nairobi project, which costs over $300 million and is being handled by a national government.”
He stressed that the focus should be on supporting Nigeria’s quest for World Cup qualification, rather than amplifying unverified claims for political reasons.
“As professionals, I advise everyone to verify their information before making conclusions,” Dikko said. “At a time when the Super Eagles are preparing for the biggest playoff of their generation, we should not allow politics to divide us. The players, coaches, and administrators need total concentration to get Nigeria to the World Cup.”
Dikko added that the FIFA Goal Projects—like the Kebbi facility—are part of broader efforts to improve football infrastructure nationwide and support Nigeria’s long-term sporting ambitions.
He reaffirmed that the NSC remains committed to transparency, youth development, and ensuring the Super Eagles return to the World Cup stage in 2026.
