NOC President Habu Gumel Charges BFN’s New Board: ‘Move Badminton To Greater Height’

The president of Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engineer Habu Ahmed Gumel has charged the newly elected board of the country’s badminton federation to move the sport to greater height, Sports247 reports.

Gumel gave the charge after witnessing this year’s elective congress of Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), which he described as a fresh call to service for the president, Barrister Francis Orbih and his board members.

While noting that Orbih now has a third term in office as the BFN’s president, Gumel urged him to avoid resting on the oars of his past achievements but he should step up his efforts in order to do even better.

Gumel stated, “I want them to ensure that they move badminton to greater height. They have been doing very well, and I want them to continue that way.

“We have the Youth Games coming up in Dakar and the Olympics of 2028 in Los Angeles. I want them to start their preparations now; so that they will go out there and make Nigeria proud.”

He concluded with an assurance of continued support from the NOC for all programmes and activities of the badminton federation, as well as other sports bodies, in order to ensure they do better in the coming days.

Gumel expatiated, “Nigeria Olympic Committee will continue to support the badminton federation. We have many areas of supporting them through our Olympic Solidarity.

“This will be in terms of training, equipment, and many other areas of aid. When they apply, we’ll listen to them, and we will make sure we support them.

“This we will do not only for badminton federation. We are going to support many of Nigeria’s sports federations to ensure that they can do well in all their activities this year.”

Sports247 gathered that badminton will not be part of this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as the hosts and organisers cut the number of events to only 10 due to cost implications.
