Noah Atubolu Gives Thanks To God, After Setting Record Of Five Saved Penalties

SC Freiburg of Germany goalkeeper, Noah Atubolu has attributed his recent record of stopping penalty kicks in five straight matches to the grace of God in his life and the 23-year-old shot-stopper went on to give thanks for the achievement.

Sports247 reports that Atubolu added that his coaches at the German Bundesliga club have also played key roles in developing him technically, which helped him make history with his club.

His remarkable feat came on the same day Bayern Munich striker, Harry Kane took his number of spot-kicks without a miss to 17, in a 4-1 win over TSG Hoffenheim, but Atubolu did the opposite – stopping a penalty for the fifth time.

Freiburg were 2-0 up when their hosts, Werder Bremen were awarded a penalty kick in the 59th minute of play, but Atubolu dived to his right and kept out the effort from Romano Schmid in a match that Freiburg went on to win 3-0.

Atubolu distinguished himself by stopping Schmid’s penalty kick at the hour mark, with Freiburg 2-0 ahead, thereby offering the home side a chance to get back into the game, but the Nigerian lad stayed calm and read the moment perfectly.

Incidentally, Atubolu had also created a buzz during the previous season, when he set a club record of clean sheets by going 576 minutes without conceding a goal, a run that stretched from Matchday 19 to Matchday 26.

The fast-rising netminder’s other saves from the spot were against André Silva of Werder Bremen in 2025, Florian Wirtz (while he was with Bayer Leverkusen) as well as Union Berlin’s duo of Kevin Volland and Josip Juranović.

Atubolu beamed with delight and gave credit to Freiburg’s goalkeeping crew for their efforts during training ahead of each match, then added; “Saving a fifth consecutive penalty is crazy. I thank God because it’s not something you can take for granted.

“We always discuss penalties together before matches. I’m just the one carrying it out on the pitch. It was a very important save. At 2-1, the game could have become really uncomfortable in Bremen. Bundesliga matches are always very tight.”
