Speaking after the announcement of the squad, Awoniyi made it clear that he holds no resentment over the coach’s decision and has accepted the omission in good faith.
“I am not disappointed. These decisions are part of football, and I respect the coach’s choice,” Awoniyi said.
The Nottingham Forest striker emphasized that representing Nigeria remains an honour, whether on the pitch or from afar, and urged Nigerians to rally behind the players who will carry the nation’s hopes at AFCON.
“The most important thing now is for Nigerians to support the team. The players selected can bring the trophy home,” he added.
Awoniyi acknowledged the fierce competition for places in the Super Eagles squad, noting that the depth of attacking talent in the team means some quality players were always going to miss out.
“Nigeria has many good forwards. Not everyone can be selected, but that does not reduce anyone’s quality,” he stated.
The striker said his focus will now shift back to his club responsibilities, while keeping himself ready for future national team opportunities.
“I will continue working hard at my club. If another opportunity comes, I will always be ready to serve Nigeria,” he noted.
Awoniyi also highlighted the importance of unity around the team, especially after the disappointment of missing out on the FIFA World Cup.
“This is a time to come together as one. The boys need encouragement, not criticism,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the Super Eagles have the quality and experience to go far in the tournament if they remain focused and disciplined.
“I believe in the team. They can make Nigerians proud in Morocco,” Awoniyi concluded.
As the Super Eagles prepare for their AFCON opener, Awoniyi’s message is clear: personal disappointment must give way to national unity and belief.
