NNL: Gateway United Return To Winning Ways Against Smart City

A dominant second-half performance ensured Gateway United returned to winning ways following a 1-nil win over Smart City FC in Match Day 5 of the 2022/23 NNL at Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode.

After the abandonment of the game in the 44th minute on Sunday owing to disruption by away fans, Gateway United continued from where it left off and deservedly broke the deadlock in the 58th minute via the spot.

The hosts were awarded a penalty following a foul on Olajide Mustapha in the area as Ameh Agada stepped up and sent Oremade Olawale the wrong way.

Tunde Azeez nearly made it 2 with a thunderous shot from 25 yards out but Oremade Olawale in goal for the visitors kept it out.

Substitute Karatu Lukmon gave a good account of himself with a curling effort that agonizingly went wide of goal in the dying minutes.

With this win, Gateway United is a point adrift of table toppers, Sporting Lagos on 8 points.

Speaking on the victory, Coach Toyin Ayinla believes his side gave a good account of themselves with the hard-fought win.

“What a game. We gave it our best shot. We will not relent. The first stanza has ended and the short break affords us the opportunity to bolster our squad. We will henceforth step up our preparations” He said.

Gateway United will now go on a mid-season NNL break but are back in Federation Cup action against Kwara United next Wednesday, 26th April 2023.
