Ahead of NNL 2025/26 season, Gateway United Football Club, Abeokuta has change their name to Gateway Football Club.
A 3-0 defeat to Godswill Akpabio FC at Uyo Township Stadium in the final Matchday sent the Olumo Boys to relegation from the Nigeria National League to the Nationwide League One.

The management of the Abeokuta-based team confirmed that the name change is part of a broader restructuring aimed at giving the club a modern identity and aligning with international football standards after getting a slot to return back to the Division-II in the chase for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League.
The Ogun State-owned side will be hoping that the rebranding ushers in a new era of success as they target promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
Gateway Football Club will start the new #NNL26 season at home to Inter Lagos FC at MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto Abeokuta on Saturday 15th of November, 2025.
