Assistant coach of Nigeria’s women’s rugby league team, Luke Shearman, has expressed confidence in the team’s readiness ahead of their participation in the World Rugby League Series scheduled to hold later this month in Canada.
Speaking after an intense week of training in Abuja, Shearman revealed that the Green Falcons have made remarkable progress in fitness, discipline, and tactical awareness. He praised the players’ commitment, saying their determination to represent Nigeria with pride has been evident in every training session.

“We’ve worked hard over the past few weeks,” Shearman said. “The girls are showing real hunger and improvement in key areas like defense, ball handling, and positional play. There’s still more work to be done, but the progress has been very encouraging.”
Shearman noted that the ongoing camping exercise has been focused on improving the team’s physical conditioning and fine-tuning their technical execution ahead of the global showpiece.
“Our goal is not just to participate but to compete,” he emphasized. “We’re looking at our structure, our mental toughness, and how to stay consistent under pressure. These are the small details that define success at this level.”
The Nigerian team, which will depart for Canada on October 17, is scheduled to face Ireland in their opening game of the tournament. Shearman said the players are motivated to make history and demonstrate that Nigeria can compete with the best on the world stage.
“This group has character,” he added. “They understand what it means to wear the green and white jersey. Every tackle, every sprint, every pass — it’s all about making Nigeria proud.”
The Green Falcons will represent Africa alongside Kenya and South Africa, with hopes of securing Nigeria’s best-ever finish at a major international rugby competition.
