Babalola made the move to the U.S. shortly after the National Sports Festival, where he was part of the team that secured a bronze medal in the men’s 4×100m relay.

The young sprinter then began his collegiate career with Dillard University Track and Field, stepping into a highly competitive environment that has already helped accelerate his development.

His indoor campaign began at the New Orleans Triangular Winter Classic in December, where he opened with a 60m time of 6.91 seconds. From that point, the Nigerian freshman began to show rapid improvement as the season progressed.

At the New Orleans Triangular, Babalola produced a breakthrough performance, lowering his 60m time to 6.75 seconds before showcasing his versatility by winning the 200m in 21.21 seconds.

The performance highlighted both his explosive acceleration and strong top-end speed.

He continued his steady rise at the University of South Alabama Jaguar Invitational, where he clocked 6.77 seconds to claim victory in the 60m.

Babalola later competed at the LSU Twilight meet, delivering another solid performance by running 6.84 seconds in the final against strong collegiate competition.

However, his biggest moment of the indoor season came at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships 2026.

The Nigerian freshman ran a personal best 6.71 seconds in the heats before going even faster in the final, clocking 6.67 seconds to secure second place and announce himself as one of the rising sprint talents in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics collegiate circuit.

The progression from 6.91 seconds at the start of the season to 6.67 seconds at nationals reflects the rapid development Babalola has achieved within just a few months.

With the outdoor season approaching, the Nigerian sprinter appears poised for even bigger performances.

If his indoor progression is any indication, Surprise Babalola could soon become another name to watch among Nigeria’s growing generation of sprint talents on the international stage.
