Nigeria’s Obiageri Amaechi Secures 2025 World Athletics Championships Discus Spot

Nigerian discus thrower, Obiageri Amaechi, has sealed automatic qualification for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, following a record-breaking performance at the Oklahoma Throws Series in Ramona, USA.

The 26-year-old launched the discus 64.80m to claim victory, an effort that not only smashed her personal best by almost two metres but also comfortably surpassed the 64.50m qualifying standard set by World Athletics.

Until her breakthrough, Amaechi’s participation in Tokyo had been uncertain.

Despite being ranked 29th out of 36 in the global quota, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) had introduced a stricter policy, allowing only athletes ranked inside the world’s top 20 to be considered without an automatic standard.

This rule had effectively ruled her out of contention.

Her stunning throw in Oklahoma not only secured her ticket by merit but also elevated her to second on the African all-time list, behind compatriot Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons, who holds the continental record at 64.96m.

Amaechi, born in the United States but representing Nigeria since 2022, has steadily risen to prominence on the international stage. Her growing medal collection includes:

Gold in discus at the 2023 African Games

Bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games

Bronze at the 2022 African Championships

Participation at the 2024 Olympic Games

With her latest feat, Obiageri Amaechi has firmly established herself as one of Africa’s leading throwers and a major contender to watch when the world gathers in Tokyo later in the year.
