Nigerian midfielder Joshua Udoh has made history as the youngest African ever to appear in a FIFA Club World Cup match, debuting for Al-Ain FC at just 17 years and 349 days old.
Joshua Udoh came on as a substitute in stoppage time during Al-Ain’s 5–0 defeat to Juventus in their Group A opener at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
The match, played at FedExField, marked Udoh’s professional debut.
Despite the heavy loss, Udoh’s brief appearance set a new benchmark for African participation in the tournament, surpassing previous age-related records for African players in Club World Cup history.
The young midfielder was one of three Nigerian teenagers in Al-Ain’s 33-man squad, alongside goalkeeper Hassan Muhammed and forward Rilwanu Sarki.
Udoh’s record-setting debut highlights Nigeria’s growing presence on the world stage, with eight Nigerian players—including five full internationals—featuring across four different clubs in this year’s tournament.
Al-Ain will look to bounce back in their next fixture, while Udoh’s milestone has already sparked excitement among fans and football analysts tracking Nigeria’s emerging talents.
