The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has congratulated Nigeria’s Women’s National Rugby League team, the Green Falcons, for their historic 10–0 victory over Ireland in the semi-final of the IRL Women’s World Series in Canada.
The win, recorded on Tuesday at the Terry Fox Stadium, sealed Nigeria’s place in the tournament’s final — a remarkable achievement for the fast-rising side led by head coach Bolu Fagborun.

Olopade described the feat as another milestone in Nigeria’s sporting evolution under the renewed commitment of the NSC to elevate all disciplines, citing similar progress in Taekwondo, Badminton, Cricket, and Swimming.
“I want to specifically commend the management and leadership of the Nigeria Rugby League for their hard work behind the scenes, which has culminated in this big achievement at this year’s World Series in Canada by our beautiful ladies,” Olopade said.
He added that the result underscores the abundance of talent across Nigeria’s sporting landscape.
“This is another testament to the huge potential the country possesses across various sports. Myself and Mallam Shehu Dikko were appointed by Mr. President to ensure we harness these talents fully — and these results show we’re on the right path,” he added.
The DG also charged the Green Falcons to make history by defeating Fiji in Sunday’s final and becoming the first African team to win the IRL Women’s Rugby League World Series.
A victory would also secure Nigeria a coveted spot in the 2026 IRL Rugby League World Cup, marking another landmark moment for women’s rugby in Africa.
