Head coach Luke Shearman has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s Green Falcons’ chances of securing a World Cup ticket at the upcoming World Rugby Series in Canada later this month.
The Nigerian women’s rugby league team will represent Africa alongside Kenya and South Africa, as they battle Fiji, Ireland, and hosts Canada for a coveted place at the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, which will be held in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Speaking ahead of their departure, Shearman said the players have been working tirelessly and remain focused on their mission to make history.
“We’re optimistic but realistic,” Shearman said. “It’s a huge opportunity for Nigeria to make its mark on the global stage. We know what’s at stake and have prepared well to compete at this level.”
The Green Falcons, who recently played warm-up matches against Ghana, are making their World Rugby Series debut and view the tournament as a defining moment for women’s rugby in the country.
“Our friendlies against Ghana gave us valuable insight,” Shearman added. “We’re learning fast and improving every day. The goal is to go all the way and bring the ticket home.
Nigeria’s opening fixture in Canada will see them take on Fiji, with the winner advancing closer to securing one of the final qualification slots for the global showpiece.
