Nigeria’s Eunice Yemisi Makes Historic Cut as CAF Unveils Officials for Women’s AFCON 2024

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released the list of match officials for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) scheduled to be held in Morocco from July 5 to 26, 2024. Among the 46 officials named for the tournament, Nigeria’s Eunice Akintoye Yemisi stands out as the only Nigerian referee selected for the prestigious event.

Yemisi joins 17 other central referees from across the continent for what promises to be the biggest and most inclusive edition of the WAFCON to date, featuring a record number of 46 match officials, up from 40 in the 2022 edition. The lineup includes 18 Referees, 18 Assistant Referees, and 10 Video Assistant Referees (VARs) drawn from 30 African countries.

Her inclusion is a significant milestone for Nigeria’s officiating representation on the continental stage, especially in a tournament that continues to grow in scale and visibility. Yemisi will officiate alongside top names like Bouchra Karboubi of Morocco, who featured at the men’s AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire and the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics, and Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda, who handled the WAFCON 2022 final and joins this edition as a VAR official.

The Nigerian Football Federation will be watching closely as Yemisi steps onto the international stage, carrying the country’s flag and adding to the growing list of Nigerian women breaking barriers in African football officiating.
