Nigeria’s rising table tennis stars Ayoola Umar Olawale and Elizabeth Emenike delivered impressive performances at the 2026 ITTF Hopes Week & Challenge Africa in Accra, Ghana, finishing among the continent’s best young players.
Sports247 reports that the week-long tournament brought together Africa’s brightest underage talents, with the top four boys and girls earning qualification to represent the continent at the 2026 ITTF World Hopes Week, scheduled for October at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) in Sheffield, England.
In the boys’ category, Uganda’s Joseph Sebatindira emerged champion, while Nigeria’s Ayoola Umar Olawale claimed an outstanding silver medal after an impressive campaign. Egypt’s Adam Lasheen Aly finished third, with Ghana’s Ransford Antwi placing fourth.
The girls’ event was won by Egypt’s Zeina Ayma Mohammed, ahead of Patience Anyango of Uganda, who secured silver. Tunisia’s Ritej Cherif claimed bronze, while Nigeria’s Elizabeth Emenike finished in a commendable fourth position to book her place among Africa’s representatives for the global event.
The performances of Ayoola and Emenike further underline Nigeria’s growing investment in grassroots table tennis development and reinforce the country’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading producers of young talent.
With qualification secured, both Nigerians will now shift their focus to the 2026 ITTF World Hopes Week in Sheffield, where they will compete against some of the world’s most promising junior players while representing both Nigeria and the African continent.
The ITTF Hopes programme is widely regarded as a key pathway for identifying and developing future international stars, making the qualification of Ayoola Umar Olawale and Elizabeth Emenike another significant milestone for Nigerian table tennis.
