This bold move was a protest against the apartheid regime in South Africa and New Zealand’s support of that discriminatory policy through sports diplomacy with South Africa’s leader at the time, Nicolaas Johannes Diederichs.

While the Africa-led boycott received praise from fair-minded world leaders, the aftermath of the decision had lasting effects on many Nigerian athletes.

The action shattered the life ambitions of some athletes, leaving them without the opportunity to compete on the grand stage.

However, after years of waiting for recognition, these heroes are finally about to receive their due acknowledgment.

The Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) is establishing the Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame, sponsored by Dr. Allen Onyema, the founder of Air Peace Airlines. This initiative aims to honor and express gratitude to these athletes for their dedicated service to their country.

The upcoming program, titled ‘From Olympics’ Boycotts to Hosting the West Africa FIFA World Cup 2034,’ will also pay tribute to the members of the senior national team, known as the Green Eagles.

In 1980, they achieved a historic milestone by winning Nigeria’s first African Cup of Nations title during the competition hosted by their own country.

During the unveiling of the program in Lagos, Dr. Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace Airlines, highlighted his motivation behind this initiative.

He expressed the desire to show Nigerian youth that they will receive their well-deserved rewards if they diligently serve their country, even if those rewards do not come immediately.

The Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame serves as a powerful symbol of recognition and appreciation for these athletes who sacrificed their own ambitions for the greater cause of fighting against injustice.

By immortalizing their names on this prestigious wall, Nigeria is sending a message to future generations about the importance of standing up for what is right and the long-lasting impact it can have.

The ceremony promises to be a poignant and emotional occasion as Nigeria celebrates the courage and integrity of these athletes who exemplify the spirit of sportsmanship and national pride.

Their sacrifices will forever be remembered, and this recognition serves as a reminder that their contributions to the nation will never be forgotten.
