Nigerians Abroad: Mikel breaks duck, Onyekuru and Awoniyi add to their goals

Nigerian midfielder, John Obi Mikel scored in Middlesbrough 2-1 win over Rotherham United to end the season with a win.

The victory leaves Boro seventh in the English Championship standings, just one point shy of a play-off spot that would have earned them a chance of qualifying to the Premier League.

Assombalonga had opened the scoring for Middlesbrough from the penalty spot in the 28th minute, and Mikel who captained the side, doubled the lead with a well placed shot into the roof of the net.

This was Mikel’s first goal since he returned to England as a free agent in January and only his second goal in English league football after 267 appearances.

In Turkey, Galatasaray striker, Henry Onyekuru scored as his team defeated rivals Besiktas 2-0 to claim top spot in the Turkish Super Lig.

The Nigerian scored the opener just before the first-half break with Fernando ensuring victory with the second goal in the 54th minute.

Galatasaray now move to the top of the table with 63 points after 31 games, equal on points with Basaksehir who have a lesser goal difference of eight goals.

On loan from Everton, Onyekuru has scored 13 goals in 28 Turkish top-flight games this season.

In Belgium, Taiwo Awoniyi scored from the spot to open the scoring as Royal Excel Mouscron won 3-0 against Zulte-Waregem in Belgium first division A UEFA Europa League playoff game on Sunday.

Goals from Selim Amallah in the 41st minute and Babacar Dione in the 55th minute sealed the win.
