Nigerian Trio Wins Scottish Cup Just Days After Europa League Final Disappointment

The Nigerian trio of Joe Aribo, Leon Balogun and Calvin Bassey have won the Scottish Cup with Rangers following 2-0 win over Heart of Midlothian in the final.

In a game where Rangers dominated, Aribo came close to breaking the deadlock in second half stoppage-time but Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon pulled off a remarkable save to deny the makeshift striker.

Substitutes Ryan Jack and Scott Wright both found the back of the net in the first half of extra-time to give Rangers a 2-0 advantage, enough to hand the club its 34th Scottish Cup, and first since 2009. The victory comes just three days after Rangers suffered defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final on penalties.

Aribo was withdrawn in extra-time while Balogun and Calvin lasted the duration of the game. Bassey put up another outstanding performance on the back of his Europa League final display which drew widespread praise from the football world.

“We worked so hard and came so far in Europe, and the cup. But in the end, you want to have something in your hands as a reward, and today we did.

“We worked really hard and I think we looked much stronger in extra time, and I think we deserved the win today. I’m very impressed and proud of them.” Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronkhorst said after full-time.
