Nigerian Trio Impress In UEFA Champions League Qualifiers Despite Mixed Results

Three Nigerian footballers made key appearances in the first qualifying round of the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League, putting in commendable performances for their respective clubs across Europe.

In Latvia, former Beyond Limits Academy defender Iboro Victory played the entire 90 minutes for FCI Levadia Tallinn in their second-leg clash against Latvian champions Rigas FS. Despite a 1–0 defeat and Levadia’s exit from the competition on a 3–2 aggregate, the 20-year-old center-back delivered a composed defensive display, showcasing maturity, aerial strength, and positional awareness under pressure.

In Moldova, Oladotun Matthew featured in the starting lineup for Milsami Orhei as they hosted FC KuPS of Finland. Matthew was withdrawn in the 62nd minute after holding firm in central defense during a tightly contested encounter. Milsami were held to a goalless draw, resulting in their elimination following a 1–0 first-leg loss in Finland.

Meanwhile, in North Macedonia, Alhasaan Ibrahim made a decisive impact for Shkëndija after being introduced in the 72nd minute of their second-leg tie against Welsh champions The New Saints (TNS). With the match tied on aggregate, Ibrahim helped solidify midfield control during extra time, contributing key tackles and interceptions as Shkëndija clinched a 2–1 win on the night and progressed with a 3–2 aggregate score.

Although only Shkëndija advanced to the next round, all three Nigerian players earned praise for their performances. Their displays underline the growing influence of Nigerian talent in European competitions, especially in defensive and midfield roles.

The next round of Champions League qualifiers will take place later in July, with Ibrahim expected to feature again as Shkëndija continue their campaign
