Nigeria’s top female hammer thrower, Sade Olatoye, has expressed optimism about her athletic future after making her debut appearance at the World Championships in Tokyo, where she finished 21st overall — her best-ever performance on the global stage.
Speaking with reporters, Olatoye described the experience as both “humbling and inspiring,” noting that competing against the world’s best has strengthened her resolve to push harder.

“It was a proud moment representing Nigeria on the world stage,” she said. “Finishing 21st might not sound like much, but it was a big step for me. I learned, I grew, and now I’m more determined than ever to keep improving.”
Olatoye, who holds dual American and Nigerian nationality, switched allegiance to represent Nigeria in 2019 and has since become one of the country’s most consistent performers in field events.
She revealed that her focus is now on building towards the 2026 athletics season, where she aims to compete in multiple international championships and improve her personal best.
However, the Ohio State University graduate emphasized the need for greater support and sponsorship from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and corporate bodies. “We have so many talented athletes in Nigeria, but without proper backing, it’s hard to compete with nations that invest heavily in sports science and athlete welfare,” she stated. “I hope the AFN and private sponsors can do more to support us — because the potential is massive.”
The 27-year-old athlete also expressed gratitude to her coaches and fans, vowing to continue working hard to make Nigeria proud. “This is just the beginning,” Olatoye concluded with a smile. “The next time I step into that circle, I want to break barriers and bring a medal home.”
