Nigerian descent goalkeeper Noah Atubolu has received his first-ever call-up to the German senior national team, Die Mannschaft. The 23-year-old SC Freiburg shot-stopper, born in Freiburg to Nigerian parents, has been rewarded for his impressive form in the Bundesliga this season.
Atubolu has been one of the standout performers in the German top flight, keeping several clean sheets and setting a record for saving five consecutive penalties — the first goalkeeper in Bundesliga history to achieve the feat.

His outstanding reflexes, calm distribution, and commanding presence have made him one of the league’s most consistent goalkeepers.
The young talent, who previously represented Germany at youth levels including the U17, U19, and U21 teams, now steps into the senior setup under coach Julian Nagelsmann. He was called up to replace Oliver Baumann, who withdrew due to illness, and will be part of the squad for Germany’s upcoming international fixtures.
Atubolu’s selection marks a proud moment for the goalkeeper and for Nigerians worldwide, as he continues to make strides in European football while embracing his roots. Although eligible to represent Nigeria through his parents, Atubolu has consistently expressed his commitment to Germany, aiming to build on the nation’s rich goalkeeping legacy following legends like Manuel Neuer and Marc-André ter Stegen.
German media have praised his rapid progress, with Freiburg officials also highlighting his maturity and leadership between the posts. His inclusion in the national team is seen as a strong indication that he could be part of Germany’s long-term future plans.
While Nigerian football fans had hoped he might one day represent the Super Eagles, this latest development effectively ends speculation about a potential switch of allegiance. For Atubolu, the call-up is both recognition and opportunity — a chance to prove himself on the world stage.
The Freiburg star is expected to join the German squad this week as preparations begin for their upcoming international matches.
