England’s Nigerian-born heavyweight boxing gold medalist at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Isaac Okoh has sent a jocular challenge to Great Britain’s Prince Williams to step into the ring with him, Sports247 reports.
Okoh spoke after pulling off a dramatic win in the 90kg class against Connor Williams of Wales, who shares the same name with Great Britain’s heir to the throne, and the Nigerian-born fighter, who is the unofficial chef of England’s boxing team, immediately wooed attention from the royal family.
Incidentally, the Prince and Princess of Wales had earlier been in the SEC Complex with their children during the morning session but chose to switch later in the day to the netball venue and missed Okoh’s gold medal bout, which the Nigerian-born boxer was not happy about.
After defeating the prince’s namesake with a unanimous verdict, Okoh, whose dad, Chris, was a Commonwealth cruiserweight champion, admitted he was slightly disappointed to notice the princce’s absence during his fight and joked that the family will have to pay for it.
He then decided to catch the royal family’s attention by calling out the king’s heir and his son, as Okoh invited William for a jab and promised to give his son, Prince George a coaching session at the right price.
“If he wants a pad session, he can give me a call – but my fee’s quite high. I don’t know if boxing is their thing but, hopefully, they will come down and watch. The crowds have been brilliant all week and the atmosphere has been fantastic. So, I hope they’ve all enjoyed it.”
Speaking further, Okoh, who often cooks for his fellow fighters in England’s camp, asserted that he can go further than his father did in his career and, with the Olympics next on the calendar at Los Angeles 2028, the Nigerian-born fighter vowed to do everything in order to get better in two years.
“We’re achieving great things and we’ll keep pushing forward. I genuinely believe I’m one of the best 90kg boxers in the world at the moment and I’m still young. When Los Angeles 2028 comes around, I’ll be aiming to win another gold,” Okoh declared with conviction.
