However, the delegation is facing an apprehensive wait as officials seek clearance for Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the 100m hurdles, from the Athletes Integrity Unit (AIU).

Scheduled to take place from August 19 to 27, the World Athletics Championships is a highly anticipated global sports event that will showcase elite athletes from around the world competing in various track and field disciplines.

Departing from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, the first group of Nigerian athletes embarked on their journey to Budapest via a Turkish Airlines flight.

Samuel Onikeku, the Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), confirmed that the athletes, both from Nigeria and the United States, have embarked on this early journey to acclimate themselves to the climate and put the final touches on their preparations.

Accompanying the first batch of athletes are Coach Tony Osheku and Gabriel Okon. The team also includes a doctor and a physiotherapist to provide comprehensive medical support during the event.

Approximately 80% of the athletes have already left for Budapest, a decision aimed at ensuring they receive ample rest and adapt to the new environment.

Samuel Onikeku expressed optimism about the team’s performance, noting that their focus extends beyond relay events to encompass a broad range of disciplines.

Anticipating surprises similar to the achievements of Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume at the Oregon World Championships, Onikeku outlined the team’s ambition to excel in multiple categories, including reaching finals and vying for medals.

One athlete among the contingent, Opeyemi Deborah Oke, a 400m runner, is eagerly anticipating her participation in the World Championships.

She shared her positive outlook, stating, “We have prepared very well and by the grace of God, we are looking forward to having a good outing.” As a former junior athlete, Oke is excited to make her debut in this prestigious global competition.

AFN President Tonobok Okowa, currently in Lagos, expressed hope for favorable news regarding Tobi Amusan’s situation with the AIU, illustrating the importance of her participation in the championship for the Nigerian team.
