Nigeria vs Russia: New Super Eagles Invitee Olusegun Olakunle Credits Family Supports As He Braces For Historic Debut

Olusegun Olakunle, one of the newest additions to the Super Eagles squad ahead of their international friendly against Russia on Friday, has credited his family’s support for helping him embrace the national team challenge after receiving a surprise call-up.

Currently plying his trade with Russian Premier League side FC Krasnodar, the dynamic forward expressed both excitement and determination as he prepares for what could be a defining moment in his career.

“Being invited to the Super Eagles is a tremendous honour,” Olakunle told thenffmedia.

“When I got the message, I initially thought it might be too soon. But my family encouraged me. They told me this was my moment—and that I had to take it. That gave me the confidence to say yes and show what I can do.”

Reflecting on his journey, Olakunle recounted his early days in Nigeria’s youth football setup.

“Playing for the U-15 team felt like a childhood dream,” he said.

“But it got real during the U-17 trials in 2019. There were thousands of players, but I managed to stand out. We qualified for the Nations Cup, and I finished as the top scorer. That was a major turning point.”

His rise began in 2017 when he led ABS FC to victory in the NPFL Youth League, earning national recognition for his talent.

Olakunle started his career with ABS before making the leap to Europe, with stints in Denmark and Bulgaria.

His consistent performances eventually caught the attention of scouts from FC Krasnodar.

After impressing with Krasnodar’s second team, he was promoted to the senior squad in April 2022. Since then, he has become an integral part of the team, known for his explosive pace, technical finesse, and eye for goal.

Now on the brink of his senior international debut, Olakunle is ready to make the most of his opportunity with the Super Eagles.

“This is just the beginning,” he said. “I’m proud to represent Nigeria, and I’m ready to give everything for the team.”
