Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has revealed that Nigeria’s primary objective is to claim maximum points against Malawi when the defending champions kick off their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign on Tuesday.
The Atlético Madrid forward said the nine-time African champions are fully focused on securing victory in their Group C opener, insisting that results matter more than stylish performances at this stage of the competition.
“For us, getting the three points against Malawi is the performance. There is no performance if you fail to win your game,” Ajibade stated ahead of the crucial encounter.
The Nigerian skipper also cautioned against taking the Scorchers lightly, acknowledging the significant progress Malawi have made in recent years and stressing that the Super Falcons must approach the game with professionalism and respect.
“We will approach the game with humility, show them respect, remain committed and ensure we get the job done.”
Ajibade noted that Malawi’s development reflects the investment and commitment of their football authorities, adding that the Southern Africans deserve Nigeria’s full attention.
“I watched Malawi play years back, and I have seen how much they have improved. It shows the intention of their Football Association, so they deserve our full commitment and respect.”
Nigeria head into the tournament determined to successfully defend the WAFCON title they won in the previous edition.
Despite questions surrounding their preparations compared to some other contenders, the Super Falcons remain one of the favourites to lift the trophy once again.
The tournament has already produced impressive performances, with hosts Morocco opening their campaign with a convincing 4-0 win over Kenya, while Algeria defeated Senegal 2-0, highlighting the increasing competitiveness of women’s football across Africa.
Head coach Justine Madugu has consistently urged his players to remain focused and avoid complacency as they seek a winning start to the competition.
