Nigeria vs Algeria; Zidane Flaunts Clean-Sheet Record Against Super Eagles’ Lethal Attack

The Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco sets the stage for a captivating contest as Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane prepares to test his almost flawless defensive record against Nigeria’s devastating attacking trio led by Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams.

Beyond the tactical battle between two African heavyweights lies a compelling individual duel that could define the outcome of the knockout clash.

Osimhen and Lookman have both been in electric form, scoring three goals apiece at the tournament, while Adams has added one goal and two assists.

Together, the trio spearhead a sharp, direct Nigerian attack that has taken the competition by storm.

Remarkably, Adams, Lookman and Osimhen have been directly involved in at least 10 of Nigeria’s 12 goals so far, underlining the Super Eagles’ attacking efficiency.

With an average of three goals per match, Nigeria currently boast the most potent forward line at AFCON 2025 and they poised to continue their rich scoring form as the competition progresses.

Standing in their path is Algeria’s resolute defence, the tournament’s most miserly unit.

The North Africans have conceded just one goal in four matches, a record underpinned by the assured performances of Luca Zidane, the son of Legendary Zinedine Zidane between the posts.

At 27, Zidane is the only first-choice goalkeeper remaining at the tournament yet to concede a goal.

The son of France and Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane, Luca has kept clean sheets against Sudan and Burkina Faso in the group stage before returning to the starting XI to help Algeria eliminate DR Congo after extra time.

While his famous father and family have been regular figures in the stands, Zidane has remained focused on carving out his own identity on the continental stage.

“I try to be myself and grow step by step,” Zidane said recently. “I am proud to represent Algeria.”

Born in France and eligible to represent three nations, Zidane opted for Algeria and made his senior international debut during last year’s World Cup qualifiers.

His emergence at AFCON 2025 followed the withdrawal of first-choice goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz, who suffered a knee injury shortly before the tournament.

Guendouz’s absence from the 28-man squad opened the door for Zidane, currently plying his trade with Spanish Segunda División side Granada.

Since switching allegiance from France, where he featured at youth level, Zidane has seized his opportunity, producing commanding displays ahead of Oussama Benbot and former first-choice Anthony Mandrea.

With Algerian roots tracing back to the Kabylie region, Zidane now faces his sternest test yet.

As the knockout phase begins, the clash between his unbroken clean-sheet run and the irresistible attacking force of Osimhen and

Lookman promises to be one of the defining duels of AFCON 2025 — a classic showdown between the tournament’s best attack and its best defence on Saturday.
