Sports247 reports that Isah, the boys’ top seed and eventual winner, thanked the oraganisers profusely after he defeated Heman Afaramai 6-2, 6-4, 10-7 to emerge champion and went home with N100,000 as top place cash reward.
The same amount was handed over to female top seed and eventual champion, Ndifreke Benjamin, after she defeated Success Godwin 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the girls’ award, while runners-up in both categories both got N50,000 each.
Isah said afterwards, “I feel very happy and proud. It is a great achievement for me, and I am grateful for the opportunity. It was really tough. I thank my coaches, school, family and organisers for their support. I will keep training hard and aim for more success.”
The founder of Nigeria Tennis Live, Damilare Okunola said he was delighted with the successful end of the competition, which surpassed his expectations in terms of participation and impact towards development of the sport in Lagos.
Okunola added, “The turnout surpassed our plans. We expected about 50 students, but recorded over 100 from 50 schools, even after registration closed. We must return to the grassroots, discover talents and polish them.
“More exposure increases their chances of sponsorship and career growth. It is exciting that many children can call this their first tournament. That is a big plus, and future editions will be bigger.”
