With just weeks to go before the high-profile 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Nigeria in Bloemfontein on September 9, Nigeria and South Africa are strategizing and intensified preparations to ensure seamless logistics for the Super Eagles delegation and supporters.
On Monday, NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, held a strategic meeting with South Africa’s Minister Plenipotentiary, Ms. Lindi Mminele, at the NSC headquarters in Abuja.
Discussions focused on timely visa issuance, logistics support, and arrangements for the Nigeria Supporters Club, which will travel to South Africa to cheer the Super Eagles.
Dikko revealed that the NSC had already secured private sector backing to complement government efforts, stressing the need for smooth processing to guarantee effective planning.
The meeting also revisited the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on sports cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa.
Both parties agreed to activate a joint implementation committee to strengthen bilateral sporting ties and ensure sports remain on the agenda during future Bi-National Commission (BNC) meetings.
Speaking after the meeting, Mallam Dikko underscored the importance of sports as a tool for diplomacy and regional collaboration.
“There is need to strengthen the ties between Nigeria and South Africa at all times, and one area this can be achieved is through sports.
Similarly, we have to ensure that travelling logistics for the match in Bloemfontein on September 9 are streamlined, and I am glad to have secured assurances of support from the Minister Plenipotentiary,” he said.
On her part, Ms. Mminele pledged the South African High Commission’s full support in facilitating visa processing but urged early submission of applications to avoid delays.
The Super Eagles will be aiming for maximum points in Bloemfontein as they continue their quest for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
