Nigeria delivered an extraordinary performance at the First West Africa Para Games in Abeokuta, capturing 7 of the 10 available gold medals in Para Armwrestling, alongside 7 Silver and 4 Bronze, in a display described as “total dominance” by the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation President, Engr. Samuel Jackson.
The historic multi-sport Para event, hosted in Ogun State, united West African nations for the first time under one continental platform dedicated to Para excellence, with Abeokuta emerging as the epicentre of regional sporting history.

Speaking after the final bouts, Engr. Jackson praised Team Nigeria’s outstanding showing, saying:
“Our athletes proved once again that Nigeria is a force in Para Armwrestling. Winning 7 out of 10 gold medals is not just victory — it’s a clear message that Nigeria is ready to lead Africa in Para sports development.”

The Games featured the presence of top continental officials, including African Paralympic Committee President Samson Deen and Nigeria Paralympic Committee head Sunday Odebode, underscoring the significance of the event for regional inclusion and collaboration.
For eight days, the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta hosted electrifying contests, technical seminars, and cultural exchanges, showcasing the strength, resilience and unity of West Africa’s Para athletes.
Nigeria’s commanding medal haul marks one of the nation’s strongest Para armwrestling outings ever, reaffirming its ambition to take a leadership role in future continental and global competitions.
Engr. Jackson said the triumph in Abeokuta represents “the beginning of a new chapter” for the sport in Nigeria, pledging continued support for Para athletes ahead of upcoming international qualifying events.
