With only two group games to navigate, today’s clash has become a must-win encounter for Coach Oluwaseun Oyeniyi and his players, who need maximum points to stand a chance of progressing to the semifinals.
The Nigerian squad, consisting of 19 players selected from secondary schools in Kaduna, Enugu, Jalingo, Ogwashi-Ukwu and Ido-Ekiti, arrived on Saturday and settled into camp at Hotel Splendid ahead of the competition.
The team is made up of students from Government Basic Education School, Government Junior Secondary School, Adaigbo Secondary School, National Grammar School and Ekiti Parapo College.
With the group stage ending today, only the top two teams from each pool will advance to the knockout round.
The semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday, with the final and third-place match set for Thursday.
Despite the setback in their opener, Nigeria’s schoolboys will look to regroup, show greater cohesion and deliver a stronger performance against Benin.
A victory today would revive their campaign and keep their hopes alive in the regional grassroots football showcase.
