Nigeria Rugby Team Appoints Alan Kilshaw as New Head Coach

Nigeria Rugby League has confirmed the appointment of Alan Kilshaw as the new head coach of the national team.

Kilshaw, who currently manages the Keighley Cougars, will lead Nigeria when they face Cumbria at Craven Park — home of Championship side Barrow Raiders — on November 2.

The historic encounter marks Nigeria’s first-ever men’s Test match on UK soil and is designed to boost player development and enhance the sport’s profile within the country.

Kilshaw replaces former Super League stalwart Webster, who was initially appointed in August but stepped down due to family commitments, according to a statement released on Wednesday night.

As originally planned, Craig McDowell will continue as Nigeria’s assistant coach.

McDowell also serves as Kilshaw’s assistant at Keighley, where the duo helped the Cougars win six of their last ten games to finish the 2025 League 1 season strongly.

Speaking on his appointment, Kilshaw expressed his enthusiasm about leading the team.

“I’m honoured to be leading the Nigeria Rugby team. I’m excited to work with both new and existing staff as we prepare for a strong performance that reflects the pride and values of Nigerians worldwide,” he said.

“It’s a fantastic time to be involved in international rugby league, and I’m looking forward to representing Nigeria with passion and purpose.”

Nigeria Rugby League Operations Director, Adam Sada, welcomed the appointment, stating:

“We look forward to working with Alan and Craig as we continue to build on the strong momentum of Nigerian rugby league.”

“Their experience and leadership will bring a new edge to our campaign as we prepare for what promises to be an exciting fixture.”

Kilshaw’s first task will be to guide the team to a competitive showing in their landmark UK Test, as Nigeria continues to expand its presence on the global rugby league stage.
