Nigeria Rugby Federation Expands Grassroots Push as Ekiti Hosts Landmark Development Clinic

The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has intensified its nationwide grassroots drive with a major Rugby Development Clinic held in partnership with the Ekiti State Sports Commission — a programme designed to deepen youth participation and build foundational structures for the sport across schools in the state.

The clinic, conducted by World Rugby–certified Educator and NRFF Development Officer, Wuraola Hussain, brought together game teachers as well as primary and secondary school game prefects for a comprehensive blend of theoretical and practical training.

Participants were taken through rugby fundamentals, safety procedures, game management, and school-friendly coaching techniques aimed at enhancing long-term understanding of the sport.

NRFF President, Dr. Ademola Are, applauded the Ekiti Sports Commission for embracing a programme he described as “critical to rugby’s long-term future,” noting that teacher and student engagement is central to the Federation’s nationwide development blueprint.

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Sports, Dr. Olusola Osetoba, said the clinic aligns with the state’s commitment to programmes that enhance personal and athletic development.
“This initiative is vital for empowering our students and teachers,” he said, adding that Ekiti is committed to supporting youth programmes that meet global standards.

Educator Hussain stressed the importance of establishing strong school-based structures, explaining that empowering teachers and young leaders is key to sustainable growth.
“This clinic is part of our national effort to make rugby accessible, safe and development-driven,” she said.

Acting General Manager of the Ekiti State Sports Commission, Lawrence Ogundele Mayowa, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to creating opportunities for young people. He added that the rugby clinic is one of several programmes designed to broaden youth sports participation across Ekiti.

The Ekiti Rugby Clinic marks a significant step in the NRFF’s ongoing mission to expand the sport’s footprint, nurture emerging talent, and promote discipline and positive engagement among Nigerian youth.
