Nigeria Legendary Goalkeeper Peter Rufai’s Burial Date Announced, PFAN Calls For State Honours

The family of late Nigerian football legend Peter Rufai announces his burial for August 22, as PFAN calls for state honours and a carnival-like farewell in Lagos.

The family of legendary Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Rufai has announced that the former Super Eagles shot-stopper will be laid to rest on August 22, with the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) calling for state honours befitting the iconic football figure.

PFAN has urged Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko, and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau to support the Rufai family and ensure a “carnival-like, befitting burial” for the goalkeeper, who served Nigeria with distinction.

“Rufai deserves nothing less than a carnival-like, befitting burial from the people of Nigeria and our great country,” PFAN stated. “He was a patriotic, dedicated, and totally committed servant who gave his all in the line of duty for Nigeria.”

During a condolence visit to the Rufai family home at Amuwo Odofin Estate, Lagos, on Thursday, July 30, a PFAN delegation—including Clement Temile (1st Vice President), Taju Disu (Lagos State Chairman), Princewill Gbogbodu (National Treasurer), and led by ex-international Tajudeen Ajide—assured the family of widespread support from both state and federal levels.

Family representative Dele Rufai expressed gratitude for the visit, noting that it provided much-needed relief during a challenging period.

PFAN is coordinating with the Lagos Sports Commission and Lagos State Football Association to organise a Valedictory Football Match in honour of Peter Rufai. Scheduled for August 22 in Lagos, the event will see all registered football clubs and academies in the state dress in their official kits to pay tribute.

Members of All Stars International Football Clubs from various divisions are also expected to participate.

Peter Rufai, who passed away recently, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated goalkeepers, remembered for his outstanding contributions to the nation’s football history.
