Nigeria’s campaign to assemble a strong team for the 2026 World Youth Scrabble Championship begins this weekend as the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) conducts its national qualifiers on the Woogles online platform.
The virtual qualifying tournament will take place on Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12, bringing together the country’s most promising young scrabble players in a battle for places in Team Nigeria ahead of the championship in Nairobi, Kenya.
National Youth Coach Hassan Olojoku Abdulrafiu said the online competition will determine the players who will represent Nigeria at the World Youth Scrabble Championship scheduled for August.
He added that the National Technical Director, Adedeji Khaleel, will issue the competition guidelines and playing format to all participants before the commencement of the qualifiers.
Abdulrafiu advised players to familiarise themselves with the Woogles platform to avoid technical difficulties during the event.
He also urged coaches and chaperones to provide a stable internet connection and a distraction-free environment as the matches will be closely monitored.
At the conclusion of the qualifiers, four players will be selected to represent Nigeria in the team event, while two additional players will earn places in the Under-10 category from a pool of four contenders.
The youth coach also appealed to coaches to intensify efforts in securing sponsorship for the team’s participation, noting that the Nigeria Scrabble Federation will continue to monitor funding arrangements ahead of the trip to Kenya.
Nigeria enters the qualifiers with confidence after an impressive outing at the last World Youth Scrabble Championship in Malaysia, where Abdulqodus Aliou finished runner-up overall and Sophia Ekeruche emerged as the tournament’s Nigeria Kicks Off 2026 World Youth Scrabble Qualifiers Online.
