Nigeria Cricket on the Rise – Akpata Salutes Yellow-Greens After Dominant West Africa Trophy Defence

President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Uyi Akpata, has praised the men’s national team, the Yellow-Greens, after they successfully defended the 2025 West Africa Trophy, describing the achievement as further evidence of Nigeria’s growing status in African cricket.

Nigeria sealed the title with a commanding 40-run victory over Rwanda in the final played at the NCF Pitch, Abuja, underlining their dominance throughout the competition.

“This victory shows the steady rise of Nigerian cricket on the African stage,” Akpata said.

The NCF president expressed pride not only in the team’s performance but also in Nigeria’s ability to host another international tournament successfully.

“It is another proud moment for the federation. Hosting and winning an international competition reflects how far we have come,” he added.

Akpata noted that defending the trophy was particularly significant, as it demonstrated consistency rather than a one-off success.

“Winning once is good, but defending the title shows structure, planning, and growth,” he said.

He praised the players’ discipline and resilience, highlighting how the Yellow-Greens handled pressure situations throughout the tournament.

“The team showed character, focus, and belief, especially in the final against a very competitive Rwandan side,” Akpata explained.

The NCF president also credited the coaching crew and support staff for their role in the team’s development.

“This success belongs to everyone — the players, coaches, officials, and support staff who work behind the scenes,” he noted.

Akpata emphasized that the federation’s long-term investment in grassroots development and structured competitions is beginning to yield results.

“We are building deliberately. Our focus is on sustainable growth, not shortcuts,” he said.

Looking ahead, Akpata stressed that the federation will continue to push for greater exposure and competitive opportunities for Nigerian cricketers.

“This is not the end. We want Nigerian cricket to keep rising and competing at higher levels across Africa and beyond,” he added.

He concluded by thanking fans and stakeholders for their support and urged continued backing for the sport.

“With continued support, Nigerian cricket will keep moving forward,” Akpata said.
