Nigeria-Born Midfield Star Chima Fujita Joins Germany’s FC St. Pauli on Long-Term Deal

Germany’s Bundesliga club FC St. Pauli has officially signed Chima Fujita, a rising star of Nigerian descent, on a long-term contract that runs until 2029.

The move marks a significant milestone in the career of the 23-year-old midfielder, who recently gained global attention as captain of Japan’s U-23 national team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Born in Tokyo to a Nigerian father and Japanese mother, Chima Joel Fujita has built a reputation as one of Japan’s most promising football talents. He was named the Most Valuable Player at the AFC U-23 Asian Cup in 2024, helping Japan secure the title and later leading the team to a dominant performance at the Olympics.

Fujita joins St. Pauli from Belgian side Sint-Truiden, where he made a strong impression in the Jupiler Pro League, with consistent performances across the midfield and three assists in 27 appearances last season. Known for his composure, tactical awareness, and ball-winning ability, he is expected to strengthen St. Pauli’s midfield ahead of their upcoming Bundesliga campaign.

“Chima is a technically sound and intelligent player who fits perfectly into our system,” said Alexander Blessin, St. Pauli’s head coach. “His ability to read the game and distribute the ball under pressure will be a big asset for us.”

Fujita’s transfer also highlights the growing global influence of Nigerian talent in international football, with his multicultural background adding to the diverse profile of modern European clubs. Despite choosing to represent Japan at the youth level, his Nigerian roots remain a source of pride and identity.

With this move to Germany, Fujita takes a major step forward in what many expect to be a standout

European career, and fans in both Nigeria and Japan will be watching closely as he aims to leave his mark in the Bundesliga.
