Nigeria Boosts Medal Count As Amaechi Claims Silver And Okon-George Advances At Islamic Solidarity Games

Nigeria’s medal haul at the ongoing 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has risen again following a strong Day 6 performance led by Pamela Amaechi, who clinched silver in the women’s discus final.

Amaechi threw 56.99m, narrowly missing out on the gold to Cameroon’s Nora Atim Monie, who won with 57.04m. Turkey’s Ozlem Becerek finished third, recording 55.56m.

In the track events, Nigeria’s Patience Okon-George booked her place in the women’s 400m final after finishing second in her semifinal with an impressive 52.92 seconds.

The three-time national champion will compete for the podium on Wednesday night at the Prince Faisal bin Fahad Stadium, facing athletes from Morocco, Turkey, Niger, Uganda, Bahrain and Guyana.

Nigeria will also be represented in Wednesday’s men’s javelin final by Kure Samuel Adams, who carries a personal best of 77.45m and a season best of 76.79m. Adams says he is “confident of a podium finish” as he prepares for one of the most anticipated throwing events of the Games.

Team Nigeria is further targeting medals in the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay finals, both scheduled for Wednesday.

With Amaechi’s silver added to the tally, Nigeria now has 17 medals:
6 Gold • 7 Silver • 4 Bronze

The team remains firmly in contention for more podium finishes as the Games enter a decisive phase.
