Nigeria And Argentina In Tug Of War Over River Plate Wonderkid Spiff Asuzu Jonathan

Spiff Asuzu Jonathan, a highly promising forward born to a Nigerian father and Argentine mother, is at the center of growing international interest as both Nigeria and Argentina eye the young River Plate striker for future national team duty.

Born in Palermo, Buenos Aires, Asuzu currently plays for the youth team of Argentine giants River Plate, where he has been impressing with his consistent goal-scoring ability, intelligent movement, and ability to finish with both feet.

Uncapped at international level, the teenage striker is eligible to represent both Nigeria and Argentina.

Despite being eligible for the Albiceleste, Asuzu has publicly expressed his desire to represent Nigeria, a decision supported wholeheartedly by his father, Godwin Asuzu.

“I believe we should always be patriotic,” said the elder Asuzu.

“He wants to play for Nigeria himself and it will be a thing of pride and honour for him to don the green white green as a player. I am happy that we are not forcing him to choose Nigeria or Argentina, the decision has been his all along and it is left for the authorities to seek him out.”

With Nigeria’s U-20 national team already qualified for the FIFA U-20 World Cup scheduled for September, all eyes are now on whether the Nigeria Football Federation will move quickly to integrate the young talent into their plans.

Asuzu’s pace, sharp football IQ, and ambidextrous finishing ability have made him one of the most exciting dual-national prospects emerging from South America.

His decision could shape not only his international future but also influence broader discussions around youth recruitment by national federations.

The race is on—and Nigeria may just have the upper hand.
