NFSC Strongly Condemns Attack on Sunshine Stars, Calls for Improved Security

In a strongly worded statement, the Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC) has expressed its condemnation and deep concern over the recent attack on NPFL side Sunshine Stars.

The team fell victim to an attack by unknown gunmen while returning from a week 13 NPFL game against Bendel Insurance.

The National Chairman of NFSC, Ambassador (Rev). Samuel Ikpea, voiced the collective outrage of football fans in Nigeria and around the world, denouncing the incident as not only painful but also disgraceful and a threat to the overall development of Nigerian football.

In the official press statement, Ikpea emphasized the need for heightened security measures, particularly during the travels of local football teams.

“Firstly, we join all football fans in Nigeria and all over the world to condemn this dastardly act on Sunshine Stars players and officials by some unknown gunmen. This act is highly condemnable and quite inimical to growing love for our local football league,” Ikpea said.

He highlighted the challenges faced by these teams, including long-distance travels on poorly maintained roads, which expose them to various risks.

The NFSC boss called upon football authorities, specifically the male and female football league bodies, to prioritize the safety and security of teams participating in local leagues.

He stressed that incidents like the attack on Sunshine Stars underscore the urgency of addressing these issues and implementing effective measures to ensure the well-being of players and officials.

“This unfortunate incident further attests to the need to take the welfare and security of the teams participating in all the local leagues seriously.

The football authorities, particularly, the male and female football league bodies should take this security and safety issues as a top priority, for the benefit of Nigerian football”, he added.

The supporters’ club, known for its passionate backing of football in Nigeria, urged the football authorities to treat security and safety as top priorities.

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of creating a secure environment for the growth and prosperity of Nigerian football.
