NFF Sec-Gen Sanusi: ‘We’re Working to Select the Best — Nigeria Must Avoid $10,000 AFCON Fine’

Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Dr Mohammed Sanusi, has assured Nigerians that the federation is working closely with the technical department to ensure that only the best players make the final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. With the tournament kicking off on December 21, 2025, Sanusi emphasised that preparation is now in full swing, and nothing will be left to chance.

Sanusi revealed that the recently released provisional list is only the first step in a meticulous process designed to identify the strongest possible squad for Eric Chelle’s team.

“We are working hand in hand with the technical department to ensure the very best players are selected for AFCON 2025,” Sanusi stated.

He stressed that beyond selection, the NFF is focused on ensuring proper preparation, logistics, and readiness as the team heads into a tournament where expectations are extremely high following Nigeria’s recent World Cup qualification failures.

“Preparation is key. We want the players to have everything they need to perform at the highest level,” he added.

Sanusi also reminded the public that CAF regulations require all participating nations to submit their final 27-man squad at least 10 days before the opening match. Failure to do so, he warned, comes with financial consequences.

“If we fail to submit on time, Nigeria will be fined $10,000. We must avoid that,” he cautioned.

He emphasized that the NFF is determined to avoid any form of administrative slip-up, especially with global attention fixed on the Super Eagles following recent setbacks.

Sanusi also appealed for patience and unity among fans, noting that the technical crew requires calmness and national support to finalize a squad capable of competing for the title in Morocco.

“We need everyone behind the team. This AFCON is huge, and Nigeria must show up fully prepared,” he concluded.
