NFF President Promises Extraordinary Assembly to Finalise Statute Amendments

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has reaffirmed that the body will convene an Extraordinary General Assembly to conclude the FIFA-mandated amendments to its statutes. This follows growing calls for reforms aimed at aligning Nigeria’s football governance with international best practices.

Speaking in Ibadan, Gusau stressed that the consultation process was still ongoing and that it was too early to draw conclusions on what changes would be adopted.

However, he assured stakeholders that transparency would guide the process.

“The process of reviewing and amending our statutes is still in its early stage,” Gusau explained. “This is something FIFA has mandated, and we have no choice but to follow through. Once we conclude consultations, the proposals will be presented to an Extraordinary General Assembly for deliberation and possible adoption.”

He further added that the amendments would not be rushed but carefully considered to ensure they strengthen football administration in the country.

“We must ensure that what we are putting forward will stand the test of time and serve the growth of Nigerian football,” the NFF President added.

Analysts believe that reforms in governance are crucial, especially with recent challenges around funding, accountability, and the performance of national teams. Gusau noted that wide consultations with clubs, state FAs, and key stakeholders would continue before the Assembly is convened.

The NFF has previously faced criticisms for lack of openness in decision-making, but Gusau reassured Nigerians that his administration was committed to doing things differently.

“This will not be a boardroom decision. Everyone will have a voice because the future of Nigerian football is bigger than any individual,” he concluded.
