The director of competitions at Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ruth David has been showered with messages of sympathy on her return from Poland with the Falconets, as it coincided with news about the death of her younger sister.
Sports247 gathered that, while still trying to overcome the Falconets’ painful quarter-final exit in a 1-0 loss to Colombia at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, Ms. David was hit with devastating news about her sister’s demise on her return home.
Leading the shower of sympathy was NFF’s acting general-secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, who was at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja to welcome the players and officials back to Nigeria on their return to the country from Poland.
Their return home came a day after they lost by a lone goal to Colombia in stoppage time of their quarter-finals’ tie that was decided in the Polish city of Łódź on Sunday, only for sadder news to hit David less than 24 hours later.
Ikpeme expressed deep sadness at the death of Queen David, and conveyed the grief of everyone at the NFF over what he described as ‘a very sorrowful situation’ for the federation’s bereaved director of competitions.
“It is a sorrowful situation. Ms Ruth David returned to the country only on Monday night from Poland, where she had been with the Falconets, throughout their credible campaign at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, only to be confronted with this piece of sad news.
“The NFF mourns with Ms David at this period and we pray that God will grant her and the entire family the fortitude to bear the big loss, while also praying that God will grant the deceased eternal rest ” Ikpeme stated.
