Next Generation Loading: ‘We’re Building For The Future’ — Wrestling Federation Targets New Stars To Replace Legends

Speaking on the federation’s vision, Amkpila emphasized that deliberate steps are being taken to ensure a smooth transition as legendary figures begin to phase out.

“We are planning for the future,” he said, highlighting the importance of continuity in maintaining Nigeria’s strength in wrestling.

The ongoing national wrestling classics have become a key platform for identifying emerging talents, with the federation using the competition to scout and nurture athletes who can step into the spotlight in the coming years.

For Amkpila, the goal is clear, create a structured pathway that allows young wrestlers to grow, develop, and eventually represent Nigeria at the highest level.

“We want to discover and nurture them,” he noted.

The urgency of this initiative is underscored by the gradual exit of some of Nigeria’s most successful wrestlers, including icons like Blessing Oborodudu and Amas Daniel, who have carried the nation’s hopes on the international stage for years.

Replacing such figures will not be easy.

However, Amkpila believes that with proper planning and investment in grassroots development, Nigeria can maintain its competitive edge.

“It’s about succession,” he implied, stressing that success must be sustained, not temporary.

The federation’s focus on talent identification reflects a broader commitment to long-term growth, ensuring that Nigerian wrestling continues to thrive despite generational changes.

For young athletes, this presents an opportunity to step forward and make their mark.

And for Nigerian sports, it signals a proactive approach to development, one that looks beyond the present and prepares for the future.

Because in wrestling, as in all sports, greatness is not just achieved.

It is passed on.
