Ndidi Will Support Super Eagles Mentally Against DR Congo – Chelle

Although Besiktas of Turkey midfielder, Wilfred Onyinyen Ndidi has been ruled out of the Super Eagles’ match against DR Congo on Sunday, due to accumulated yellow cards, he will remain in the Nigerian camp to ‘support his teammates mentally,’ Sports247 gathered.

This was disclosed by Eagles’ coach, Eric Chelle, who admitted that the team’s assistant captain will be missed in the decisive final match of the 2026 World Cup qualification play-offs, but quickly added that other options are already being considered.

Two alternatives who stand out prominently are two hard working midfield battlers with similar surnames – Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika – who have been used sparingly over the years as understudy replacements for Ndidi.

Another option being touted is the possibility of moving Hull City of England centre back, Semi Ajayi further upfield in a holding midfield role, which he has played for the Eagles in two previous matches.

Ajayi had to sit out Thursday’s 4-1 win over Gabon due to his own share of accumulated bookings but, having served the one-match mandatory suspension for two yellow cards in the course of the qualifiers, he is now available for selection.

However, while pointing out that he has credible alternatives available, Chelle disclosed that Ndidi will remain in the Eagles’ camp at Rive Hotel in Rabat, Morocco … so that he would rally his colleagues verbally and psychologically.

Chelle posited, “Ndidi is an important player for us. His experience, ability and leadership on the pitch are important for this team. But we will manage the situation.

“We have a large squad of players and we will make changes. Ndidi is still here with us and will support the team mentally and with his presence.”
