Adepoju, who played under Coach Clemence Westrnoff and participated in the World Cup the same year, emphasized the importance of unity, vision, and common goals in achieving success on the continental stage.

In an interview with a Punch correspondent, Adepoju reflected on the synergy within the 1994 squad and underscored the significance of shared vision among players and officials. Drawing from his experience, he remarked, “I don’t think any of them knew what happened and even knew most of the players (in 1994). I don’t know what they must have seen or learnt before now. But what I can say is that it is not enough to have good players playing very well in their clubs. That is to say, talent is not enough.”

Adepoju stressed that while talent is a crucial foundation, success in tournaments like AFCON requires more. He elaborated, “One of the things is for the players and officials to have the same vision and think in the same direction. They must work towards achieving a common goal by helping one another with dedication and determination. It’s just about bringing everything it takes to succeed together.”

The football icon highlighted the importance of harmony within the team, urging players to set aside personal differences and focus on the collective objective. “There must be no bad blood, everyone must know their strengths and limitations and be ready to help one another in the team,” he added.

As the Super Eagles gear up for the AFCON 2023 challenge, Adepoju’s insights serve as a valuable reminder of the intangible elements that contribute to tournament triumphs beyond individual talent. The squad will undoubtedly benefit from the wisdom of a player who has tasted success on the African football stage.
