Former Super Eagles midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju has described the recent verbal battle between his erstwhile teammate, Samson Siasia and ex-captain of the Nigerian team, John Mikel Obi as ‘a stinking situation that is not good for public consumption.’
Sports247 gathered that Adepoju, who was fondly called ‘Headmaster’ during his playing days, further opined that the controversial issue that recently cropped up regarding fees paid for the under-23 national team’s flight to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 2016 Olympic Games should be left in the past.
While Mikel, who was captain of the team that eventually won bronze at the competition, declared that he made payments for the flight, Siasia countered by denying the declaration, but Adepoju stressed that they both should just allow bygone-be-bygone.
Mutiu Adepoju pondered, “I don’t know the reasons behind all these things they are saying, both of them. It’s high time these things stopped, because of collateral damage that such things can cause.
“I don’t know when all these things happened. I don’t want to know who is right or who is wrong … because it is something that has passed.”
He went on to hail the impact that both Siasia and Mikel had during their respective days in the national team and concluded with an appeal for peace to reign once again between both icons, who first worked together in the Flying Eagles’ squad that won silver at the 2005 FIFA U20 World Cup in the Netherlands.
“Mikel Obi has played his part. He has served Nigeria, and nobody can say he did not do well to qualify as a hero.
“Samson Siasia also served Nigeria as a player and as coach of the team. He has also done well.
“So, I think it’s high time we stopped all this talk. It’s stinking and not good for the public,” Adepoju admonished.
