The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has publicly praised Team Nigeria’s wrestlers following their historic performance at the 2025 African Senior Wrestling Championships in Casablanca, Morocco.
In a post shared via his official handle on X (formerly Twitter), Olopade lauded the team’s exceptional showing, highlighting their haul of 10 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze as one of the proudest moments in Nigerian sports in recent years.

“This is another outstanding display from our wrestlers, returning home with a dominant result,” the DG wrote. “Mr. President is also pleased with your feat, where Nigeria emerged overall champion in the female category with 9 gold medals.”
The Nigerian women’s wrestling team delivered an overwhelming performance, winning 9 out of the 10 gold medals contested in the women’s freestyle events — further solidifying Nigeria’s dominance on the continent.
Olopade emphasized that such success is a direct result of intentional planning and investment in athlete welfare.
“We are very intentional about the welfare of our athletes to ensure optimal performance,” he stated. “And we will continue to provide all sports with the necessary support to excel.”
This public commendation follows an emotional and victorious run in Casablanca, where wrestlers like Christianah Ogunsanya, Adijat Idris, Hannah Reuben, Jumoke Adekoye, Ebi Biogos, and Stephen Izolo made headlines with powerful wins and inspiring performances.
The standout moment from the men’s team came as Stephen Simon Izolo won Nigeria’s first male gold medal in four years, defeating Tunisia’s Farouk Jelassi in the 65kg freestyle final.
As the wrestlers return to Nigeria, their achievement is being celebrated not just by sports fans but by the highest levels of government — a reminder of what is possible when talent meets support and national pride.
