Mozambique head coach Chiquinho Conde has sounded a note of caution ahead of his side’s Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 encounter with Nigeria, insisting that knockout football leaves no margin for error.
The Mambas will face the three-time African champions on Monday night, knowing history is firmly against them — Nigeria have never lost to Mozambique in previous meetings. Despite that record, Conde believes his team has earned the right to compete at this stage and is ready to challenge one of the tournament favourites.

Mozambique’s confidence is drawn from their performances earlier in the competition, particularly against heavyweight opponents Ivory Coast and Cameroon, where they showed tactical discipline and competitiveness despite falling short on key moments.
“Mozambique have shown that we have a strong team,” Conde said.
“Against Ivory Coast and Cameroon, we failed in the details, but now at this stage it is kill-kill.”
Acknowledging Nigeria’s pedigree, the Portuguese tactician stressed the importance of balance in approach — combining respect with belief.
“Nigeria are favourites to win the match, but let us face the game with humility, tranquillity, and a lot of responsibility,” he added.
“We have come to this Round of 16 stage with respect, and now we’re going to show what we can do.”
Nigeria arrive at the fixture full of confidence after finishing top of their group with a perfect record, reinforcing their status as title contenders. Mozambique, however, will be motivated by the unpredictability of knockout football, where a single moment can define an entire campaign.
With pride, progression, and momentum at stake, the stage is set for an intense contest as Mozambique look to defy history and Nigeria aim to assert their dominance.
Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00pm on Monday, with a quarter-final place awaiting the winner.
