Africa’s hopes at the 2026 FIFA World Cup remain alive after Morocco became the first team from the continent to book a place in the Round of 16, while Ivory Coast will look to continue the momentum when they take on Norway later on Tuesday.

Following South Africa’s heartbreaking elimination at the hands of Canada, the Atlas Lions restored African pride with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands in Monterrey.
Morocco secured a 3-2 shootout win after a thrilling 1-1 draw that lasted through extra time.
The Dutch had looked set for victory when Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, but Morocco showed remarkable resilience as Issa Diop headed home an injury-time equaliser from Chemsdine Talbi’s cross to force extra time.
Neither side could find a winner during the additional 30 minutes, sending the contest to penalties.
Morocco held their nerve as the Netherlands missed three spot-kicks, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou making a crucial save before Ismael Saibari converted the decisive penalty to send the Atlas Lions into the last 16.
The victory continues Morocco’s impressive rise on the world stage following their historic semi-final appearance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and makes them the first African nation to reach the Round of 16 at the 2026 tournament.
Morocco will now face Canada in the Round of 16 on July 4 in Houston as they aim to extend another memorable World Cup campaign.
Attention now turns to African champions Ivory Coast, who face Norway in Dallas in another Round of 32 encounter. The Elephants will be hoping to join Morocco in the last 16 and keep Africa’s quest for a historic World Cup run alive.
Tuesday’s remaining Round of 32 fixtures will also see France face Sweden, while co-hosts Mexico take on Ecuador.
